Event Overview

Education and skills are required to grow our economy and standard of living, and to improve the social and cultural life of our country. However, our education and skills development systems faces numerous challenges and disruptors. Barriers to access are limiting participation in education at all levels, especially for special needs students. Inclusive education is a part of the Eco-Schools programme under global citizenship theme.

At this day-long event, individuals with intellectual/development disabilities and their circles of support will participate in workshops, activities and plenary sessions that focus on how to live independently within the community.

Event Overview

GGAF in partnership with WWF Malaysia have organized turtle tour and camps for students since 2016. This initiative would bring sea turtle education to students all over the world in a dynamic and fun way. The goals of the program would be to reach teachers and students all across the Melaka schools through classroom lessons. Local teachers would also be able to experience in-class presentations from real biologists.

Since its inception back in November 2016, the program has reached far and wide. Students who participated were able to partake in games, activities and team projects that focused on marine conservation. Our in-class outreach programs saw nearly 800 students during the school year, bringing science directly into the classroom. This programme continues on 3-4 times on monthly basis throughout the year.

Event Overview

Sea Turtles are some of our ocean’s most amazing creatures and deserve a day dedicated to them. So, on June 16, countries around the world are celebrating World Sea Turtle Day. This is a yearly event we celebrate by gathering sea turtle enthusiasts and students at Padang Kemunting Melaka. Basically, a turtle lover’s dream month. World Sea Turtle Day highlights the importance of and celebrates sea turtles swimming around the world.

The Melaka Sea Turtle Conference is the premier annual event of local sea turtle conservation. It brings together about 80 students across Malaysia: academic and government researchers, environmental organizations, conservation workers, and also many volunteers. The meeting provides an opportunity to highlight new research, discuss environmental issues, and develop new collaborations.

Since the start in 2018, Melaka marine turtle conferences gather participants from schools in Melaka, and conservation biologists, who share the common goal: the conservation of marine turtles and their environment. GGAF is collaborating with WWF Malaysia and Melaka department of fishery to organise 2 days event on yearly basis. This year the event is expected to launch Melaka Chief Minister. Students who attend the event over the weekend (June 15th- June 16th) can receive training in workshops that focus on various aspects of sea turtle conservation. Therefore, it is a great way for students to make contact with experts in the field and also acquire training that will help them begin careers in wildlife biology and protected species management.

Event Overview

The Green Flag is an international symbol of a school’s sustainability. Schools complete an assessment report detailing what they have achieved throughout the year, according to the seven steps of the Eco-Schools Programme. Independent assessors then review this report and speak with the students and teachers involved, providing feedback on whether to award the school or to help the school complete the Pathway for later in the year. The Eco-Schools Award ceremony aims to give recognition to schools that have exemplary eco-schools programmes, so as to encourage them to continue their efforts as well as encourage other schools to follow their lead.

Tokens of appreciation in the form of trophies are presented to the schools as recognition for their exemplary efforts in promoting environmental education in schools and surrounding communities. This event will be held in January every year to award those Green Flag, Silver and Bronze award recipients.

Event Overview

Climate change is one of the defining issues of our time and its impacts will be felt in Malaysia and globally. Navigating the science behind climate change and the actions, which individuals can take to reduce their carbon footprint, can be daunting for young people and adults alike.

The Climate Ready Classrooms project prepares young people to join a national network of carbon literate ambassadors who plan and act on climate change issues within their own schools and communities. It is a one-day accredited carbon literacy-training course for secondary schools which has been designed for young people aged 14–17 years, along with their teachers, head teachers, and youth and children’s workers.

We are pioneering this training in Malaysia in collaboration with Keep Scotland Beautiful and Carbon Literacy Project, UK. The project will kick-start in June 2019 for the first cohort involving 28 schools.

Event Overview

Young Reporters for the Environment (YRE) is a journalism program that empowers young individuals to take environmental actions through the media of writing, photography, and videography. This program provides adequate exposure to students regarding the ethics and role of journalism in addressing the challenges of global climate change. YRE use a solution-based approach to empower young people to create a more environmentally conscious world. This programme strengthen GGAF’s overall goals to facilitate the students in matters of climate change mitigation. By putting youth as the agent of change, they should be encouraged to build their confidence and voice out to make a difference for their environment. The program featured numerous captivating and interactive workshops that cover three main media of journalism; photography, videography and writing. Annual competitions will be organised at national and international level to recognize and reward the creative works made by our young minds.

Event Overview

A forum facilitates dialogue between students and community/corporate leaders about environmental issues. This Leaders-Students Dialogue series is an opportunity to exchange views and also share local government initiatives with the younger generation. At the same time, this is a platform for students to raise their concerns about the environment and conservation.

Eco-Schools twinning programme is a project where existing Eco-Schools to link up easily with schools in other parts of the world. As a results of the twinning programme the will exchange knowledge and share their best practices. Event Overview

Forests act as the lungs of the planet, but they are rapidly disappearing. According to Mr Sharma from Afforestt, we lose the equivalent of 36 football pitches in any given minute.

Imagine if you could plant a forest in your garden, in your city or even in your workplace? Tiny forests are small city forests, as big as a tennis court, in which a large number of tree species are planted to get the most biodiversity possible. Mr Sharma and Afforestt are spearheading this concept.

GGAF has started this pilot project in Melaka in 2018. In 2019, the first official tiny forest: 30 trees of 21 species were planted in SK Air Baruk tiny forest plot.The project will be expanded to another 20 schools in 7 years to educate the children the importance of forest.

World Environment Day is a platform for Action World Environment Day and is the UN’s most important day for encouraging worldwide awareness and action for the protection of our environment. Since it began in 1974, it has grown to become a global platform for public outreach that is widely celebrated in over 100 countries. The aim of the Day is to raise awareness of the environment and specific environmental issues. The day will be celebrated with many activities such as clear up campaigns, tree planting and lectures.

Event Overview

Plastic Free Schools is a system shaking, change making, pupil led education programme. It is a ground breaking programme that equips and empowers young activists with the tools to create positive, lasting environmental change.

Plastic Free Schools is a programme that aims to measurably reduce plastic pollution on school campuses in Malaysia, with a special focus on the reduction and ultimately the elimination of plastic bottles, plastic straws and utensils, and plastic food packaging. Participating schools required to identify plastic pollution as a key concern on their campuses, and are taking action to confront the problem. This means different things for different schools, from hosting a plastic-free sporting event, to ending bottled water sales across the campus. Any school or student group with the intention of fighting plastic pollution is eligible to join.

Under this campaign schools will be given a tools to assess plastic pollution or contributor in the schools, develop an action plan, pledge to go for plastic free and implement the project. Those schools that successfully get rid of plastic consumption and have found alternatives will be assessed and awarded. The campaign will begin in July 2019.

Event Overview

Whoever you are, wherever you are, water is your human right. Over 2.1 billion people live without safe water at home. One in four primary schools have no drinking water service, with pupils using unprotected sources or going thirsty. World Water Day is held annually on March 22 to focus on the importance of freshwater and advocating for the sustainable management of freshwater resources.

To support the UN goals and increase the awareness, we invite Eco-Schools participants in Melaka to enrol in the competition and gather at one of the Green Flag School to celebrate and create awareness of water.

Event Overview

Taking into account that as humanity we already live beyond the planetary boundaries and in the near future our planet will need to feed 10 billion people, we believe that reflection on our lifestyle and its impacts on the people and ecosystems of the world is a crucial step towards a future that can work for everyone.

We are focusing on work with a global dimension of responsible food consumption and sustainable food systems. The problematic management of global food systems nowadays is a root cause of key global challenges. Hunger, poverty and human rights violations, environmental degradation and biodiversity loss, exploitation and pollution of natural resources altogether stem from the way our food is produced, shipped and consumed. These problems stand behind many social and political conflicts and contribute to climate change in a major way.

The We Eat Responsibly Project supports schools in exploring ways on how to make more responsible food choices. This project will be launched in August 2019 in selected schools in Sabah to eradicate the no breakfast issue.
